The first three days of the TRANSFORM² experiment in Timișoara have been dedicated to a series of controlled seismic simulations aimed at understanding how different structures respond to a variety of earthquake scenarios across Europe.
The simulations reproduced seismic events from:
Poland – representing cases of induced seismicity,
Italy – focusing on the Norcia seismic sequence,
Romania – simulating earthquakes from the Vrancea region, and
Greece – including events from Samos (2020), Damasi (2021), and Anhydros–Amorgos (2025).
The second day of the TRANSFORM² experiment concluded with the simulation of an intermediate-depth Vrancea earthquake of magnitude 7.2, marking another important step toward improving our understanding of seismic behavior and fostering the development of more resilient infrastructure across Europe.
On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, the third day of the experiment, a synthetic motion with predefined amplitudes at distinct frequencies was carried out. The motion of the seismic table was designed to be proportional to those recorded during the previous two days (Monday and Tuesday), using as input accelerations from earthquakes that occurred in Romania (Vrancea, 1986), Poland (induced events in mines), Greece (Samos, Damasi, and Anhydros–Amorgos), and Italy (2016).
The main goal of this experiment was to obtain recordings from low-cost and high-fidelity GNSS receivers, antennas, accelerometers, and tiltmeters, both equipped with and without external atomic rubidium clocks, in a controlled environment. This setup allowed for multiple tests to be performed, enabling researchers to assess the complementarity and sensitivity of these instruments to vibrations similar to those caused by real earthquakes.
The measurements collected will form a robust dataset for future studies exploring the potential of geodetic applications in seismology.
