Next-Generation Seismological Research Infrastructures: Connecting Research, Civil Protection, and Innovation
Post-event Press Release —The first forum of the TRANSFORM2 project, titled “Next-Generation Seismological Research Infrastructures: Connecting Research, Civil Protection, and Innovation,” was held with great success on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the Archaeological Museum of Patras. It was organized by the Region of Western Greece and the National Observatory of Athens under the auspices of the University of Patras.
Welcoming speeches were given by Mr. Fokion Zaimis — Deputy Regional Governor of Achaia, Region of Western Greece, Mr. Efstathios-Sotirios Kouris — Deputy Regional Governor of Kefalonia and Ithaca, and Dr. Vasileios Mokos — Director General of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization.
A detailed presentation of the project was delivered by Assistant Professor Panagiotis Elias, Department of Geology of the University of Patras and coordinator of the TRANSFORM2 project.
The presentations covered a wide range of topics, from European lithosphere monitoring infrastructures (EPOS) and near-fault seismic observatories to the management of induced seismicity and international experiences in the operation of Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS). The discussions also highlighted the latest advances toward the development of a national Earthquake Early Warning System in Greece, with the significant contribution of the European project TRANSFORM². Further presentations showcased the activities of the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) in enhancing seismic safety in Greece, technological innovations in seismic monitoring, and the utilization of research data and collaborations developed within the framework of the TRANSFORM² project.
Presentations were given by professors from the Geology Departments of Patras, Athens, and Kansas, as well as by representatives of public institutions and private companies such as the National Observatory of Athens, Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, the Regional Unit of Kefalonia and Ithaca, ITSAK/MEOASP, and GEFYRA SA, respectively.
Talks were also given via teleconference by Dr. Alexandru Marmureanu, National Institute of Research and Development for Earth’s Physics, Romania, and Dr. John Clinton, ETH Zurich, Switzerland. In addition, Dr Frédéric Guattari, President and Co-founder of MAÅGM (France), presented novel approaches in the development of sensors for real-time, high-precision monitoring of motion and pressure, while Mr. Aris Stathopoulos-Vlamis, Technical Director of GEFYRA S.A., discussed the unique case of constructing the Rio–Antirrio “Charilaos Trikoupis” Bridge over an active fault zone. The Forum concluded with round-table discussions aimed at creating effective frameworks for cooperation and the exchange of knowledge and opinions.
